President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has pledged that Addu City and Fuvahmulah will have electricity capacity to meet demand for the next decade, with infrastructure upgrades expected to be completed within the next six months.
Speaking at a press conference held at the President’s Office, the President addressed the challenges faced in the power sector, noting that many power plants across the country were in poor condition when the current Administration assumed office.
He stated that a major project has been approved to address the electricity shortfalls in Addu City and Fuvahmulah. According to the President, the Ministry of Finance and Planning has allocated funds from the national budget to implement the initiative.
The goal of the project is to build enough capacity in both cities to cover the anticipated demand for electricity over the ensuing ten years. The President confirmed that this work would be completed in the coming six months.
He also noted that prior to this Government’s intervention, power plant maintenance in many areas had been lacking, and numerous islands were facing regular electricity disruptions due to generator failures.
As part of ongoing efforts to address the issue nationwide, the President reported that 77 generators have been replaced with new gensets, while 313 have been repaired or overhauled. Additionally, the electricity grid has been upgraded in 15 islands so far.
