President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to propose amendments to the Drugs Act that would allow for the confiscation of assets and goods obtained through drug trafficking.
Speaking at a press conference held on Saturday, the President said the proposed changes would go beyond asset confiscation and include additional measures aimed at dismantling drug networks and supporting rehabilitation efforts for addicts.
According to the President, the country recorded a significant increase in drug seizures last year. He noted that drug confiscations rose by 478 per cent compared to 2023. In addition, authorities seized 10,486 containers of alcohol, including both bottles and cans, over the same period.
In 2024, a total of 4,929 separate operations were conducted to intercept narcotics, with enforcement efforts targeting distribution networks operating across 11 atolls.
As part of broader strategies to address addiction and reduce recidivism, the Road Development Corporation (RDC) has been tasked with developing community-based rehabilitation centres in Noonu Velidhoo, Kaafu Kaashidhoo, and Laamu Gan.
The President also said that in cases involving foreign nationals engaged in the drug trade, the Government has adopted a policy of deportation within 48 hours rather than pursuing prosecution through local courts.
