President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that construction of a new modern fish market in Malé City will begin in July.
Speaking at a press conference at the President’s Office on Saturday, President Dr Muizzu said the project was a key initiative during his tenure as Mayor of Malé City Council. Although initial groundwork was laid during that time, construction was delayed due to various factors.
The President stated that the Government will provide all necessary support and wants the project to proceed under the original agreement, with the City Council retained as the client and overall supervisor.
The planned facility will be a four-storey building built to modern standards. The ground floor will serve as the fish market, while the first and second floors will be allocated to food vendors. The top floor will be made available for other commercial businesses.
The development is part of a wider Government effort to revitalise the fisheries sector. According to President Dr Muizzu, 30 fisheries-related projects are set to launch this year and next.
