Police have arrested a 23-year-old man for driving under the influence and dangerously evading officers in Hulhumalé, in an incident that involved a high-speed chase and a vehicle missing a rear tyre.

According to the Maldives Police Service, the suspect was observed driving recklessly on the highway without headlights, running four red lights and ignoring police signals to stop. Officers monitoring the road reported the vehicle travelling at high speed, prompting a broader alert to other patrol units in the area.

The vehicle was later sighted moving from Haivakaru Magu towards Treetop in Hulhumalé Phase 1. Despite repeated attempts by police to stop the car, the driver continued speeding, navigating turns and speed bumps without slowing down.

The car eventually came to a halt near Flat Number 97 on Rabarugas Magu. As officers approached, the driver attempted to flee once more, but was intercepted and taken into custody.

The suspect has been identified as Mohamed Mais, aged 23, of Malé City. The Criminal Court has ordered his detention for three days pending further investigation.

Police also confirmed that the vehicle’s right rear tyre was missing at the time of arrest. The missing tyre was later recovered near Flat Number 103. The car has since been towed, and investigations into the incident are ongoing.
