The National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) disbursed MVR 50.77 million as disability allowance in May, reflecting a slight increase from April’s total of MVR 50.22 million.

According to official statistics, the number of individuals on the National Register of Persons with Disabilities reached 14,308 by the end of May, with 156 new additions. Financial assistance was provided to 14,144 eligible recipients during the month.

The latest data shows that physical disabilities account for the largest share of registered cases, with 4,091 individuals. This is followed by 3,195 individuals with multiple disabilities and 1,892 with mental disabilities.

The Government is currently in the process of finalising the National Action Plan on Disability Inclusion. The five-year strategy, developed in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), aims to promote and protect the rights of persons with disabilities in the Maldives. Implementation of the plan is scheduled to begin later this year.
