The Directorate of Aviation Security Administration (DASA) has formally confirmed that the newly constructed passenger terminal at Velana International Airport is fully compliant with international aviation security standards.
This announcement was made by Chief Inspector Ahmed Nasheed, Head of DASA, as part of a video series produced by Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) to highlight ongoing developments at the airport.
Chief Inspector Nasheed explained that the terminal’s security infrastructure has been developed in alignment with the highest global standards and regulatory benchmarks. In particular, he pointed to the installation of an advanced Baggage Handling System (BHS), which incorporates security features comparable to those utilised in leading international aviation hubs, thereby ensuring both safety and operational efficiency.
Building on this, Nasheed described the implemented aviation security standards as comprehensive and precise. He emphasised that the deployment of state-of-the-art security technologies at the terminal is expected to greatly enhance passenger assurance, particularly among international travellers arriving in the Maldives.
In addition to its security capabilities, the new terminal is poised to offer significant strategic benefits. Nasheed noted that the upgraded facility will support increased airline operations, providing the capacity to accommodate more carriers seeking to establish or expand routes to the Maldives. This, he remarked, represents a meaningful advancement for the nation’s tourism-driven economy, allowing for growth while maintaining stringent security protocols.
Further underlining its national significance, Nasheed characterised the terminal as a transformative project for the Maldives. He observed that the development not only strengthens the country’s standing as a premier global travel destination but also demonstrates a firm commitment to upholding internationally recognised aviation safety practices.
With the ability to manage higher passenger volumes and an expanded range of airline operations, the terminal is positioned to contribute to the sustainable expansion of the tourism sector, without compromising on safety and security.
DASA, operating under the authority of the Ministry of Defence, functions as the national regulatory body for civil aviation security in the Maldives. Its responsibilities include overseeing compliance with international aviation security agreements, establishing and maintaining airport security zones, supervising all aspects of civil aviation security, and representing the country in international aviation forums. Through these mandates, DASA plays a pivotal role in ensuring that the Maldives' aviation sector consistently meets international standards while safeguarding the integrity of air travel across the nation.
