Vice President Uz Hussain Mohamed Latheef has returned to Malé following an official visit to Seville, Spain, where he attended the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD4).
During the visit, the Vice President delivered the Maldives’ national statement at the conference’s opening segment and gave the keynote address at Multi-Stakeholder Roundtable 6, which focused on “Reforming the International Financial Architecture and Addressing Systemic Issues.” In his remarks, he called for urgent reforms to ensure fair representation of small island developing states (SIDS), promote debt sustainability, and implement equitable credit rating systems.
At Maldives-led side events, he highlighted key Government initiatives, including the Coral Reef Insurance scheme and support for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), with particular emphasis on youth and women entrepreneurs.
He also participated in the side event “Debt Sustainability Support Service” alongside the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, Gaston Browne, reaffirming the Maldives’ commitment to tackling the debt-related challenges faced by SIDS.
The Vice President attended official receptions hosted by Their Majesties the King and Queen of Spain, as well as the Prime Minister of Spain. Senior Maldivian officials accompanying him also took part in various engagements during the conference, held from June 30 to July 3.
