Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has announced that the new passenger terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA) will officially open on July 26, with its first services dedicated to international flights operated by Maldivian, the national airline.

The opening is timed to coincide with the country’s 60th Independence Day and marks a major milestone in the Maldives’ aviation infrastructure. MACL confirmed that preparations are underway to ensure a smooth transition, with the terminal set to begin handling other international airlines ahead of the upcoming tourism season.

In a statement, MACL said the move honours the national carrier, which is working to strengthen its international presence. Maldivian is currently expanding its fleet and service offerings as part of a broader plan to transform into a fully profitable and competitive international airline.

As part of the operational readiness process, MACL conducted a trial run of the new terminal’s check-in and IT systems this week. The test, involving company staff, was aimed at verifying the functionality of key operations such as boarding pass printing and system integration. These trials are part of the airport’s ORAT (Operational Readiness and Airport Transfer) process to ensure all equipment, services and personnel are fully prepared ahead of the terminal’s launch.

Once fully operational, the terminal is expected to significantly improve passenger experience and increase the airport’s handling capacity. MACL has highlighted the new terminal as a key development in positioning the Maldives as a more capable and competitive air travel hub, with anticipated positive impacts on both tourism and the national economy.
