Minister of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam has announced that subsidised fuel for fishermen is now being supplied from nine regions, as part of efforts to ease rising operational costs in the sector.

Speaking at a press briefing by by the Special Cabinet Committee on Middle East tensions, the minister said the Government is working to ensure fuel is made available at reduced prices to fishing vessels across the country.

Minister Shiyam noted that rising global fuel prices have had wider economic impacts beyond fishing communities, adding that the Government remains committed to supporting the sector. He said measures are underway to facilitate access to fuel for all licensed fishing vessels, following improvements observed in the industry in recent months.

The minister said that previously, subsidised fuel was available from four regions, but the network has now been expanded to nine. He added that arrangements are also being made to extend supply to three additional atolls where fishing activity remains high.

Minister Shiyam further stated that despite challenges faced by processors and exporters, fish exports are continuing, with companies securing logistics even at higher costs. He added that more than 1.1 million litres of fuel have been released so far under the subsidised programme.
