The Maldives recorded more than 7,000 international flight movements in the first five months of 2025, reflecting steady growth in the country’s aviation and tourism sectors.

According to the latest statistics from the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA), a total of 7,613 international flights were logged between January and May - a 5.8 per cent increase compared to 7,193 during the same period last year.

Of these, 6,961 were scheduled commercial flights, while 652 were general aviation flights, including private and charter operations.

Monthly flight movements for 2025 were as follows:

  • January: 1,794
  • February: 1,511
  • March: 1,575
  • April: 1,484
  • May: 1,249

This increase in flight activity coincides with continued growth in tourism arrivals and hospitality capacity. From January to May, total tourist arrivals reached approximately 966,000, up from 892,000 during the same period in 2024.

Operational bed capacity as of May 2025 stood at 62,640, with an occupancy rate of 63.8 per cent. In comparison, May 2024 recorded 61,456 operational beds with a slightly higher occupancy rate of 65.2 per cent. The number of resorts in operation also rose from 171 to 175 year-on-year.

Flight volumes are expected to rise further in the second half of the year with the official opening of Velana International Airport’s new terminal on July 26. The terminal expansion is designed to accommodate increased traffic and enhance passenger experience. Additionally, recent upgrades at Maafaru International Airport have further strengthened its role as a growing hub for private aviation in the Maldives.
