The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) has forecasted moderate to heavy rain, strong winds, and rough seas across parts of the country today, as a storm system developing to the west continues to affect national weather conditions.
In its latest 24-hour forecast, the MET is predicting rain and thundershowers in several regions, with west and northwest winds blowing at 13 to 23 miles per hour. Wind gusts may reach up to 45 miles per hour in the afternoon, making sea conditions rough. Waves are expected to rise between four and seven feet.
A White Alert has been issued from Haa Alifu to Thaa Atoll, effective from 12:00 p.m. to 06:00 p.m. today, warning of severe weather.
The MET said the storm system is expected to continue affecting the Maldives over the next two days, bringing further rainfall and strong winds. The agency has advised the public, especially seafarers, to avoid non-essential sea travel.
The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Coast Guard has also advised people to take extra precautions and refrain from travelling at sea during nighttime hours.
