The Ministry of Health has launched the Maldives SPECS 2030 initiative, a strategic roadmap aimed at improving access to and the quality of optic health services across the country by 2030.
The initiative was introduced at a ceremony held at Hulhumalé and is part of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) global framework to ensure integrated and inclusive optic care. The programme supports the Maldives’ goals to meet Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in health equity and service accessibility.
SPECS 2030 outlines a comprehensive approach to enhancing ophthalmic services, focusing on strengthening infrastructure, workforce development, and service delivery at the national level. It will be implemented in partnership with WHO and developed using the Eye Care Situation Analysis Tool (ECSAT), which will assess the current state of eye care services in the country.
The strategy will identify key challenges in service provision, including the availability of refraction services, cataract treatment, assistive technologies, and trained professionals such as ophthalmologists and optometrists. Input from sector stakeholders will also guide the plan.
According to the Ministry of Health, the initiative aims to establish a more resilient and inclusive optic care system that ensures all Maldivians, regardless of geographic location, have access to essential eye health services.
