The Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) disbursed MVR 6.7 million to fishermen for their catch last week.

According to statistics released by MIFCO, 165 fishing boats supplied fish during the period, up from 125 boats the previous week. The company noted that the decline in early August was largely due to bad weather across many parts of the Maldives.

With more boats delivering their catch, payments to fishermen rose sharply. The previous week’s disbursement stood at MVR 3.9 million, meaning last week’s figure marks a 70.6 per cent increase.

The highest payout was recorded on Saturday, when 35 boats unloaded their catch. On that day alone, MIFCO paid fishermen a total of MVR 1.53 million.

The strong turnout highlights both the resilience of the fishing community and the Government’s continued commitment to supporting the livelihoods of fishermen.
