President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that Baa Dhonfan land reclamation project will not proceed.
In a post on his official X account on Tuesday, the President said the project would not proceed following requests from residents. He affirmed that his Administration undertakes projects in islands based on community needs and would not move forward with initiatives opposed by local communities.
The President recalled that, in line with residents’ requests, he had earlier agreed to a reclamation project in Dhonfan and signed an agreement for it. However, he said he has since been informed that residents no longer support the project. As a result, the Government will not continue with the reclamation, and the relevant ministry will formally notify the island council.
The Dhonfan land reclamation project was signed on 13 August during President Dr Muizzu’s visit to the island.
Since the signing of the agreement, there have been widespread concerns about the potential impact on Hanifaru Bay, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in Baa Atoll. The site serves as a crucial feeding and mating ground for several endangered marine species, including whale sharks, reef manta rays, and Napoleon wrasse, as well as protected marine turtles.
