The Ministry of Construction, Housing, and Infrastructure has confirmed that 43 islands have submitted interest in building homes on private land under the Government’s provincial housing project.

The initiative, designed to support residents facing financial challenges, is part of a broader plan to implement housing developments in 57 designated islands across the atolls.

According to the Ministry, Island Councils were asked in early July to compile and share lists of residents interested in constructing housing units on their own plots. Of the 57 eligible islands, 43 have responded, while 14 Councils are yet to submit information.

For islands that have provided details, the projects are now undergoing pre-qualification evaluation. This stage includes key preparatory work such as arranging contractors and securing financial frameworks.

The Ministry highlighted that contractors, both local and international, have shown strong interest in the programme. Projects will be awarded on a design-and-build basis, with developments categorised into four types:

  • Projects with fewer than 50 housing units are reserved for Maldivian contractors.
  • Larger projects, 51 to 150 units, 200 to 250 units, and more than 300 units, are open to both Maldivian and foreign firms.

With over USD 64 million allocated for housing infrastructure this year, the Government has reaffirmed that expanding homeownership and providing sustainable housing solutions remain a top national priority.
