President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has emphasised that freedom of expression in the Maldives must be exercised responsibly and in accordance with truth.

Speaking on Rayyithunnaa Eku podcast, launched to share accurate information on Government policies, the President said there is no restriction on citizens telling or writing what they wish, provided it reflects truth and avoids harm.

He noted that the Maldives, as a fully Islamic nation, is bound by principles that safeguard dignity, protect lives, and prevent the spread of harmful falsehoods. The President stressed that while freedom of speech is guaranteed, it does not extend to the dissemination of misinformation.

Highlighting Islam’s recognition of human dignity and the right to self-defence, President Dr Muizzu said protecting individuals from defamation is also part of these values. He expressed confidence that Maldivians would support responsible expression that upholds truth and respects the rights of others.
