President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has underlined the need to balance development with environmental protection, especially in islands where local tourism is growing.
Speaking to residents in Vaavu Fulidhoo on Friday, he said that while land reclamation addresses community needs, in islands where local tourism is growing, it must be carried out in a way that protects the natural environment and preserves the beauty of the shores.
The President revealed that the newly commenced harbour project in Fulidhoo will be accompanied by 12 hectares of land reclamation, which will link with the harbour. Although reclamation was not included in the original harbour plan, he assured residents that it would be carried out in response to their demands.
“The land reclamation project was not signed today and practical work has not begun, but this remains one of the most important commitments made to you. As promised, 12 hectares of land will be reclaimed and joined to the harbour to support the island’s development,” he said.
He added that such projects must reflect the wishes of the community, urging residents to submit their views in writing through the island council to prevent situations where projects are cancelled after work has already begun.
The President also highlighted the new building for Fulidhoo Health Centre, inaugurated on the same day, which will provide expanded facilities for more than 1,200 people, including residents and tourists. In addition, a Maldivian Rufiyaa ATM was installed during his visit, and he pledged that a US dollar ATM will be introduced early next year.
Other commitments announced included the construction of a futsal stadium, the completion of Fulidhoo School’s multi-purpose hall by Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), and the allocation of budget next year for further school infrastructure development.
During the visit, the President also met with the Fulidhoo Island Council and the Women’s Development Committee (WDC). The Council raised concerns over coastal erosion, the need for additional health staff, sports facilities, and adjustments to the reclamation project’s design. The President assured that the Government will work on addressing their requests.
