President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that a nationwide operation will begin on 21 September 2025, targeting unlicensed businesses, many of which are reportedly operated by expatriates in the Maldives.

Speaking to residents during his ongoing tour of four atolls, the President said foreign nationals have been illegally engaging in local businesses, and noted that the Government has already begun work to address the issue.

Outlining the scope of the initiative, President Dr Muizzu said the operation will also focus on identifying undocumented individuals and facilitating repatriation where necessary. He noted that while the issue has persisted for years, sustained efforts to resolve it had not been undertaken previously.

According to the President, the Government has so far registered biometric data on 178,982 foreign workers and deported more than 8,000 undocumented migrants.

He further linked the issue of undocumented workers to other challenges, including drugs and gang-related crime. These, he said, had remained unresolved in the past due to vested interests, but assured that his Administration would address them without bias and free from undue influence over the judiciary or the executive.

Highlighting recent developments, President Dr Muizzu pointed to Saturday’s court verdict in a 130 kg drug case and the ratification of the Prevention of Gang and Other Serious Offences Act. He also revealed that amendments to the Drugs Act are being prepared and will be submitted to the next session of Parliament.

Reaffirming his Administration’s stance, the President said accountability in matters of public safety and governance will be ensured, with all actions pursued fairly and in strict adherence to the rule of law.
