President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has assured residents of Faafu Magoodhoo that the long-delayed airport project will be completed and operational within a year.

The announcement was made during the meeting held as part of the President’s visit to the island, where he toured the construction site and held discussions with the community about their concerns. Residents expressed concern over the slow progress of the project and fears that development might be halted altogether.

The Magoodhoo Airport development was contracted to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) in October 2022. Although approximately half of the project has been completed, work has slowed in recent months. President Dr Muizzu noted that his Administration is working with the relevant ministry and the contractor to address the causes of delay and expedite construction. He emphasised that the Government would address existing challenges and accelerate progress to ensure the airport’s completion within the promised timeframe.

Alongside commitments on the airport, the President announced that upgrades to the island’s health centre would begin this year, and measures to address the shortage of space at the school would also be initiated. He further noted that the Government had received requests from Magoodhoo to support an integrated tourism project in the island’s lagoon.
