President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has unveiled a sweeping development package for Thaa Vilufushi, highlighted by a new airport to be completed within 30 months and a state-of-the-art hospital scheduled to open in 18 months.

During a community gathering on the island, the President confirmed that land reclamation for the 1,800-metre runway begins tomorrow at a site selected by residents. Construction of the hospital will also start immediately, with the Government pledging to deliver the facility within a year and a half.

Addressing housing needs, he outlined plans to install water, electricity, and sewerage systems in all completed housing units by year-end, and to build another 100 units next year, either on individual plots or in a dedicated area. Long-standing housing issues stemming from the 2004 tsunami will be resolved, with financial compensation offered if required.

Additional initiatives outlined by the President include the Bank of Maldives activating banking services in the island on Wednesday, with a full-service branch scheduled to open by March. The President also highlighted plans for a Maldives National University campus on the island, alongside the expansion of the harbour and the conversion of the local mosque into a full Islamic Centre.

Road upgrades, including the ring road, will move forward as part of the newly formalised development scheme. Work on a football stadium, as well as futsal and handball courts, is scheduled to begin this year, while fish aggregation devices to support local fisheries will be installed within the next three months. To sustain these projects, a dedicated Public Works Unit will be established on the island to manage ongoing and future infrastructure needs.

The visit also marked the official launch of passport issuance services for residents of Vilufushi.
