President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said the Government aims to build a resilient, people-centric tourism model that uplifts local economies and reflects the richness of the islands.

In a statement shared on X to mark World Tourism Day, the President described the occasion as a moment to celebrate the spirit of Maldivian hospitality, which continues to captivate visitors from around the globe. He added that the Government remains committed to inclusive growth by extending opportunities to every atoll and every community.

Tourism remains the backbone of the Maldivian economy, contributing the largest share to state revenue and foreign exchange earnings. Recent efforts by the Government include expanding policies to promote local tourism, such as allocating islands and lagoons to administrative areas to support community-based initiatives.

World Tourism Day is celebrated annually on 27 September. This year’s theme, “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation,” highlights the sector’s potential as a driver of positive change.
