The Maldives Police Service has alleged that opposition parties are planning to incite violence during their anti-corruption protest scheduled for Friday, warning that such actions will not be permitted.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, police said intelligence reports indicate that gangs may be mobilised to provoke unrest and damage property during the rally. They further noted concerns over a possible conspiracy to deviate from the authorised route, deploy groups of gang members in batches, and create disturbances in Malé.
The police stressed that while the right to freedom of assembly is guaranteed under Article 32 of the Constitution, it must be exercised lawfully. They added that ensuring safety and security during peaceful gatherings remains a top priority for the service.
Police urged the organisers to ensure the rally is conducted peacefully and to avoid any actions that could threaten public order. The agency further reiterated that unrest or property damage in the capital will not be permitted.
