President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has described the elderly as a valued asset to the nation, embodying wisdom and experiences that guide the Maldives toward a stronger future.
In a message on his official X account, the President stressed that every elderly person is a blessing to the country, carrying lessons from the past to help build a more prosperous tomorrow. He added that one of the Government’s core policies is to make every community in the Maldives a caring and inclusive environment for senior citizens, ensuring happiness and dignity for all generations.
First Lady Sajidha Mohamed also celebrated the occasion with a message emphasising the role of elders in shaping families and communities. She highlighted how the kindness, humility, and guidance of grandparents, parents, and senior relatives strengthen households and enrich social bonds. She prayed for a compassionate society that continues to respect and cherish the elderly.
The International Day of Older Persons was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1990 and is observed worldwide every year on 1 October. This year’s theme,“Older Persons Driving Local and Global Action: Our Aspirations, Our Well-Being and Our Rights,”underscores the role of older generations in nation-building and calls for greater efforts to protect their health, rights, and social participation both locally and globally.
