The Maldives Police Service has called on demonstrators to uphold public order and refrain from obstructing law enforcement duties, following violent clashes during the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) protest in Malé on Friday night.

In a statement, police said protesters attempted to divert their march onto Majeedhee Magu near Artificial Beach, where they confronted officers and engaged in disorderly conduct. During the confrontation, riot control equipment was forcibly taken from police officers and used against them, which the service described as a serious criminal offence.

Police confirmed that legal action will be taken against individuals involved in violent acts and disruption of public peace, stressing that such behaviour will not be tolerated.

While reaffirming the constitutional right to peaceful assembly, the Maldives Police Service emphasised that protests must remain non-violent and within the bounds of the law.
