Minister Zameer commends police professionalism amidst protest tension --
Minister of Finance and Planning, Moosa Zameer, has commended the Maldivian Police Service for their professionalism in responding to unrest during a protest in Malé last night.
Despite a designated route being provided for the demonstration, protesters blocked Majeedhee Magu, causing disruption to daily life in the capital. According to the minister, this defiance of planned arrangements highlighted the challenges faced by the police in maintaining peace and order.
He noted that the police carried out their responsibilities with patience and professionalism in the face of intentional disturbances. Emphasising the importance of upholding the rule of law, the minister underlined that while peaceful protest is a constitutional right, it must be exercised within legal boundaries.
The minister further stressed that law enforcement bears the responsibility of protecting lives, property, and the rights of all citizens, and pointed out that the police service is taking significant steps to fulfil this duty.
The remarks come at a time of heightened political activity in Malé, where authorities continue to balance the right to assembly with public safety.
