President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to recognising mental health as a fundamental human right and a national priority, emphasising the importance of ensuring access to mental health support, particularly in times of crisis.
In a message on the occasion of World Mental Health Day, observed globally on October 10, President Dr Muizzu underscored that mental well-being forms the foundation of strong individuals, families, and communities. He stated that the Government is working to integrate mental health support into the country’s broader emergency response systems, including those addressing climate, health, and humanitarian crises.
This year’s World Mental Health Day is being observed under the theme “Mental Health in Humanitarian Emergencies,” highlighting the urgent need for global action to address mental health challenges faced by communities affected by conflict, displacement, and disaster.
The President drew attention to the severe mental health crisis in Palestine, where access to care remains critically limited due to ongoing humanitarian conditions. He reiterated the Maldives’ call for strengthened international efforts to ensure that mental health services are accessible to all, particularly those in conflict-affected regions.
The World Health Organization (WHO) and global partners celebrate World Mental Health Day annually to promote awareness, reduce stigma, and encourage policies that prioritise mental health as a universal human right.
President Dr Muizzu reaffirmed his Administration’s commitment to advancing comprehensive mental health reform, ensuring that the country’s emergency response systems protect both the physical and psychological well-being of its people.
