The Government of Maldives has welcomed the agreement reached on the terms for implementing the first phase of US President Trump’s proposal to end the war in the Gaza Strip.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the development as “a glimmer of hope” that could help sustain calm and offer the people of Palestine an opportunity to begin healing after years of conflict and hardship. The Maldives commended the tireless efforts of the countries and mediators who contributed to achieving this outcome.

However, the Government cautioned that Israel has repeatedly violated previous agreements and must now honour its commitments under the new arrangement. The statement also reiterated that Israeli leaders indicted by the International Criminal Court should be held accountable.

Reaffirming the Maldives’ consistent position, the Ministry stated that the country remains steadfast in its support for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, including their right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent and sovereign State of Palestine based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

President Trump’s Gaza peace proposal outlines a phased plan to achieve an end to hostilities, beginning with a ceasefire and the release of hostages, followed by the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from the territory. The plan also envisions steps towards reconstruction, governance reform, and eventual statehood for Palestine.

The first phase of the agreement, now set in motion, includes measures to establish calm and build confidence between the parties. While welcomed internationally as a potential turning point, the success of the plan will depend on sustained commitment from all sides and adherence to the agreed terms.
