Maldives Immigration has reported a significant rise in demand for passport services through its newly established regional offices, reflecting a milestone in the Government’s efforts to decentralise essential services.

The latest statistics released by Maldives Immigration record a total of 3,884 passports issued in September. Of this figure, 2,904 passports were issued in the Malé region, 960 passports were issued through regional offices, and 20 passports were issued by the Maldives Immigration Office in Malaysia.

The regional passport services, introduced as part of the Administration’s nationwide expansion of Immigration services, have received strong public interest. In September, 18 regional offices across the atolls issued passports. The highest numbers were recorded in Maradhoo, Addu City, with 146 passports, followed closely by Kulhudhuffushi City, which issued 144 passports. Gaadu Dhaalu Thinadhoo ranked third with 111 passports issued, while Raa Ungoofaaru followed with 100 passports.

The Maldives High Commission in Malaysia, established in April 2025 during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to the country, continues to provide passport and ID card services for Maldivians residing abroad.

The expansion of passport and ID card services to the atolls fulfils a presidential pledge to make these essential services more accessible to citizens outside the capital. The service was officially extended nationwide on 7 October, with the launch of the services in Alifu Dhaalu Mahibadhoo, making passport issuance services available in all atolls.

With the introduction of these decentralised services, residents no longer need to travel to Malé City to obtain ID cards or passports, reducing both time and travel costs. The initiative reflects the Government’s broader policy of improving convenience and accessibility of public services across all regions of the Maldives.
