The Maldives Customs Service has destroyed over 3.1 million illegally smuggled cigarettes following a recent enforcement operation.
The cigarettes, totalling 3,183,040 sticks or 199 cases, were seized during a raid that uncovered an attempt to smuggle them into the country.
According to Customs, the confiscated items were destroyed in Dhoonidhoo under standard disposal procedures. Officials noted that the number of smuggling cases has risen in recent months, linked to the increase in cigarette import duties. Authorities reaffirmed their commitment to curbing the illegal tobacco trade and ensuring compliance with national customs and taxation laws.
