The Parliament’s Committee on Independent Institutions has voted in favour of approving three nominees for appointment to the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission (MMBC).

A total of ten candidates had applied for positions on the commission; however, two withdrew their applications before the interview process commenced. The remaining eight candidates were evaluated and awarded marks by the committee based on their performance during interviews.

Under parliamentary regulations, when a nomination is referred to a committee, the committee must assess candidates based on their educational background, professional experience, and interview performance. Only those who achieve a score of more than 75 per cent are recommended for a final vote on the parliamentary floor.

Following the evaluation process, the Committee on Independent Institutions approved three candidates who met the required threshold. They are former Broadcasting Commission President Safa Shafeeq, and members Aminath Sarahath Izzath and Mohamed Farusath.

A parliamentary vote to confirm the three nominees is scheduled for today’s sitting.

Once appointed, the new members will join the seven-member Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission. Four members representing broadcasters and other media outlets have already been selected without an election. This will be the first Media and Broadcasting Commission established under the Media and Broadcasting Regulation Act.
