Key development projects have been launched in Laamu Fonadhoo during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to the island.
Practical works have commenced on the land reclamation, shore protection, and Kadhdhoo Airport development projects. Speaking to residents on Monday night, the President stated that the project will involve reclaiming 114 hectares of land to accommodate a 2,800-metre runway. An additional 30 hectares will be reclaimed to expand Fonadhoo Island, bringing the total reclaimed area to 144 hectares.
He noted that land reclamation works are expected to be completed within a year, while the full project, including airport development, is scheduled for completion within 36 months.
In addition, practical works have also begun on the establishment of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Regional Emergency Operations Centre and a campus for the Islamic University of Maldives (IUM).
During the visit, President Dr Muizzu also inaugurated ATM services in Fonadhoo as part of efforts to decentralise essential services across the atolls.
