President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that permanent police presence has been established in all inhabited islands across the Maldives.

Speaking to residents of Laamu Gan during his visit to the island on Tuesday, the President said that as of 5:15 p.m. that evening, with the commencement of permanent police presence in Raa Rasgetheemu, every inhabited island in the country now has a permanent police presence.

The President recalled his announcement during the 2025 Presidential Address, where he pledged to establish permanent police presence in all inhabited islands by the end of the year, noting that the goal had been achieved two months ahead of schedule.

He further stated that the Administration views permanent police presence as vital for safeguarding communities, adding that residents often face significant inconvenience when police are stationed on nearby islands instead of their own.

Speaking on the state of police facilities across the country, the President said that when he assumed office, only 17 islands had dedicated police buildings, while in other islands police operated from rented spaces provided by local councils, Women’s Development Committees, and private parties. He said this arrangement often made it difficult to provide adequate services to residents.

According to the President, practical works for new police stations have now begun in 63 islands, and agreements have been signed for 36 more, bringing the total to 99 islands. He added that agreements for an additional 39 islands will be signed this month, bringing the total number of islands where practical works will have commenced to 138 by the end of the year.

The President reaffirmed that by the end of his Presidential term, every inhabited island will have a dedicated police station, a significant improvement from the 17 islands that had such facilities when he assumed office.
