President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that beginning in January 2026, the Government will increase the allowance for single parents and introduce a new allowance for thalassaemia patients.
Speaking to residents of Laamu Gan, the President said that MVR 211 million has been allocated in next year’s budget to raise the single parent allowance to MVR 3,000. He added that a total of MVR 11.7 million has been earmarked for the newly introduced thalassaemia allowance, which will provide MVR 1,000 per patient.
These measures are part of the Administration’s efforts to foster a compassionate and caring society. The President’s manifesto also includes a commitment to increase the total child support allowance for single mothers and fathers to MVR 12,000, at a rate of MVR 3,000 per child.
In addition to these initiatives, President Dr Muizzu reaffirmed his earlier commitment made in October to settle outstanding payments owed to local businesses inherited from the previous administration, amounting to approximately MVR 2.3 billion. He stated that clearing these dues will provide significant relief to local businesses.
