President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that Laamu Atoll will be prioritised for heritage tourism under the Government’s visitor economy policy, with a focus on preserving heritage and fostering national identity.
Highlighting that Isdhoo and Kendhoo are among the most heritage-rich islands in the Maldives during the community meeting, the President said the Government aims to promote these areas as key cultural destinations. He stressed that preserving national heritage is not only essential for tourism but also for passing on Maldivian nationality, values and history to young people and visitors. The President stated that the Government would work closely with local councils to promote heritage sites in collaboration with communities.
Addressing infrastructure concerns raised by residents, President Dr Muizzu noted that the sewerage systems in several islands of the constituency have faced long-standing issues. He said that while some systems were established years ago, they now require major overhauls rather than minor repairs. The President added that road development projects in the islands can only proceed after resolving these issues, or by carrying out both works simultaneously.
The President further announced that the Government will soon award the project to construct a state-of-the-art 30 bed hospital to serve the people of Isdhoo and Kalaidhoo. The hospital will be developed in a location that ensures easy access for both communities. Until then, the health centres on the islands will continue to be strengthened to meet residents’ needs.
President Dr Muizzu also said that next year’s budget will include funds for the construction of classrooms in island schools and the development of sports facilities, including volleyball courts, handball courts, fitness and recreation centre, and running track. He added that the construction of a new powerhouse in the area is expected to be completed by the end of next year, further improving essential services in the island.
