The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) has issued a yellow weather alert covering a large area of the country, from Haa Alifu Atoll in the north to Thaa Atoll in the south.

The alert, which remains in effect from 1:30 p.m. to 05:30 p.m., warns of winds reaching 25–30 miles per hour and gusts of up to 50 miles per hour during showers. The advisory follows a period of worsening weather conditions across the country.

According to the MET Office, the strong winds and rough seas may cause significant disruptions to sea transport, with potential risks to smaller vessels. The agency has urged mariners and travellers to remain cautious, while residents in low-lying islands have been advised to take preventive measures against flooding and waterlogging.

The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has also advised the public to avoid non-essential travel until conditions improve, citing safety concerns amid reports of accidents and delays at sea. Authorities are closely monitoring developments, with emergency services on standby to respond to any weather-related incidents. This marks the first yellow alert issued by the MET Service since the start of the pandemic, underscoring the intensity of the current weather system.
