FIFA President Gianni Infantino has arrived in the Maldives on an official one-day visit, the first visit by a FIFA president to the country in 19 years.
Infantino was warmly received at Velana International Airport by Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim, Football Association of Maldives (FAM) President Ahmed Thoriq, Head of FIFA’s Regional Office Prince Rufus, and Commissioner of Sports Mohamed Tholal. Senior officials from the Ministry of Sports Fitness and Recreation and members of the Maldivian football community were also present.
Traditional performances were held at the airport to welcome the FIFA chief. During his visit, Infantino is scheduled to meet President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, along with officials of FAM and Maldivian football clubs, to discuss efforts to strengthen the country’s football sector.
The visit is seen as a major boost for Maldivian football as FAM works to improve governance, stabilise club finances, protect player rights, and develop local talent. A special football match will be held in Infantino’s honour this evening from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Infantino, 55, originally from Italy, is known for his experience in football reform and development. His visit follows former FIFA President Sepp Blatter’s trip to the Maldives in 2006, making this a significant occasion for the nation’s sporting community.
