The Maldives has signed the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime.
The agreement was signed by Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Abdulla Khaleel on behalf of the Maldives during a ceremony held on 25 October 2025 in Hanoi, Vietnam.
In a post shared on X following the signing, Minister Dr Khaleel described the occasion as a historic moment for the Maldives, noting that it represents an important step toward a safer and more secure digital future.
He also highlighted that small island nations like the Maldives face significant challenges in combating cyber threats due to limited resources. Despite these constraints, he said the Maldives and other small developing countries remain determined to reduce cybercrimes, establish clear legal definitions for such offences, and collaborate at the international level to combat them effectively.
The UN General Assembly adopted the Convention on 24 December 2024, marking the first time an international treaty specifically addressing cybercrime has been drafted. The Convention provides member states with the necessary tools to prevent, investigate, and prosecute cybercrimes.
The signing process will remain open until 31 December 2026 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
