President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that work is underway to make Lhossalafushi part of Lhaviyani Kurendhoo to address the island’s growing land constraints.

Speaking to residents of Kurendhoo during his ongoing tour of Lhaviyani Atoll, the President said that the shortage of available land is one of the most pressing challenges facing the island. He noted that the ongoing 50-housing-unit project alone would not be sufficient to meet the community’s needs, which is why efforts are being made to make Lhossalafushi part of Kurendhoo.

President Dr Muizzu explained that the island had previously been contracted for another project by a past administration. He added that the Government is now working to resolve the matter under the terms of the existing agreement in a way that avoids losses to the State, with discussions currently underway to reach an amicable solution.

Highlighting other key concerns raised by residents, the President said that harbour development remains a top priority and assured that the project will be completed with solutions that reflect the community’s needs.

He also emphasised that all development efforts in Kurendhoo will be carried out in line with the wishes of its residents. As examples, he mentioned road development project and the expansion of the health centre, noting that the current facility is no longer sufficient to cater to the island’s growing population. The President described the planned extension as a major step towards strengthening healthcare services in Kurendhoo.
