President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said that the State budget is focused on achieving holistic national development by delivering both tangible and intangible benefits to the people.
Speaking to residents of Naifaru during his ongoing tour of Lhaviyani Atoll, the President said the 2026 State budget will place special emphasis on healthcare, particularly preventive healthcare. He noted that the Government is working to strengthen medical services across the country to reduce the need for Maldivians to seek treatment abroad.
The President added that several healthcare services are already being expanded this year through a decentralised system, describing healthy citizens as a vital investment for both economic and social progress.
Emphasising the importance of preventive and curative healthcare, President Dr Muizzu stated smoking as one of the most pressing public health concerns. He highlighted key Government initiatives, including the generation-wide smoking ban that will come into effect on 1 November 2025.
The President explained that while the ban will apply only to those born after the cut-off year, other measures such as price increases are being implemented to encourage a healthier society. He also urged those not covered by the law to voluntarily quit smoking.
President Dr Muizzu also spoke about the Government’s decision to ban vaping, noting that the growing use of vapes, particularly among schoolchildren, had prompted the move to protect public health and social well-being.
