The Parliament has endorsed the appointment of former Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare Dr Aishath Rameela as a member of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM), with 63 votes in favour.

The vote took place during Wednesday’s sitting of Parliament, following the review and recommendation of the Parliament’s Human Rights Committee.

Dr Rameela was nominated for the post by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu earlier this month to replace HRCM member Mariyam Muna, whose term is set to expire on 30 November 2025.

Dr Rameela, who resigned as Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare in December last year citing health reasons, has more than three decades of experience in public service. Beginning her career as a nurse in 1990, she has served in various roles in both the public and private sectors.

She holds a PhD in Social Science, awarded in 2010 in Malaysia, and has previously served as Minister of State for Health and Minister of State for Health and Family.
