Raa Ungoofaaru Regional Hospital has announced that occupational therapy services are set to begin next week, as part of its efforts to expand healthcare to tertiary-level standards.

The hospital, one of the most well-equipped in the region, is being developed under the Government’s initiative to strengthen tertiary healthcare across the Maldives. It currently operates four subspecialty units focusing on respiratory diseases, cardiovascular conditions, kidney disorders, and other specialised treatments, supported by four subspecialist doctors and a team of 55 medical officers.

Speaking to State media, the hospital’s Manager said significant progress has been made toward providing comprehensive tertiary services. He confirmed that a qualified occupational therapist has already arrived to begin the new service, which aims to enhance patients’ physical and mental functioning to help them lead more independent lives.

The therapy will be available to people of all ages, with appointments scheduled in the same manner as regular consultations. The hospital is also preparing to introduce speech therapy next week for children with communication difficulties.

Both occupational and speech therapy services have been in high demand among the public. The hospital is working closely with its Mental Health Department to establish the necessary resources to deliver these services effectively. The Ungoofaaru Regional Hospital, which also provides MRI services, operates 24 hours a day, currently serves around 150,000 people annually.
