Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed has stated that building a healthy generation presents an opportunity for the Maldives to boost productivity and advance national development.
The Minister made the remarks on his official X account following the implementation of the generational ban on tobacco, which came into effect today.
He described President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s decision to introduce the ban as historic and courageous, noting that elected leaders should be far-sighted, public-spirited, and nationally minded. Minister Saeed also conveyed his well wishes to the President in his efforts to build the nation through reforms in various sectors.
While some have criticised the Administration’s measures to curb tobacco use over concerns of reduced tax revenue, the Government has stated that tobacco consumption remains the leading cause of chronic illness and disability in the Maldives. Official figures show that 84 per cent of all deaths in the country are linked to chronic diseases associated with smoking. It is expected that the long-term gains in productivity from a healthier population will outweigh any potential loss in tax revenue.
