The Parliament’s Housing Committee has held discussions on the proposed Housing Bill currently under review, with amendments to be introduced following consultations with relevant institutions and stakeholders.

During the committee meeting, members discussed public feedback and concerns raised by Government bodies regarding the implementation of the bill. The Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure is expected to provide its official input, which will be submitted to the committee this week for further review.

Committee Chair and Inguraidhoo MP Ibrahim Falah said the proposed amendments were formulated after extensive discussions on recommendations received. He confirmed his intention to resubmit the revised bill to the People’s Majlis next week.

The Housing Bill, submitted by South Maafannu MP Asma Rasheed, was forwarded to the committee for evaluation on 5 May 2025. The legislation aims to ensure that housing projects across the Maldives are carried out transparently and accountably, while establishing registration procedures and defining the responsibilities of housing operators.

According to the bill, a national housing survey must be conducted within six months of its enactment to identify citizens in need of housing. It also seeks to outline policies for providing affordable housing programmes to financially vulnerable families lacking adequate accommodation.
