MPL launches internal probe into fatal ferry capsize

Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has launched an internal investigation into the ferry accident that occurred near the Malé Commercial Harbour on Sunday, which resulted in the deaths of two employees.

The victims have been identified as Masood Hossain, a Bangladeshi national, and Ali Aflah Abdullah, both employed by MPL as labourers.

In a statement, MPL said that an internal investigation has been initiated to determine the cause of the incident and that further details will be shared following the findings.

According to the Maldives Police Service, the incident was reported at 3:44 p.m. on Sunday. The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Malé Area Command and Coast Guard Second Squadron were dispatched to the scene to carry out rescue operations.

There were 14 people on board the ferry at the time of the capsize. Five individuals are currently receiving treatment at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).
