The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has detained two Sri Lankan fishing vessels found operating illegally within the Maldivian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

According to the MNDF, the boats were intercepted by the Coast Guard during a routine patrol of the EEZ after MNDF Ari Corps drones identified the vessels. The vessels were taken into custody on 5 November after being detected approximately 137 nautical miles east of the Maldives.

The MNDF Coast Guard is currently escorting the two boats to Malé City for further investigation.

Authorities have reiterated their commitment to safeguarding the nation’s maritime boundaries and ensuring that all foreign vessels operating within Maldivian waters comply with international maritime regulations.
