The Maldives and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia have signed the annual agreement governing arrangements for the Hajj pilgrimage for the year 1447.

The agreement was formalised during an official visit to Saudi Arabia by Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, who signed on behalf of the Maldives. Saudi Minister of Hajj and Umrah, Dr Tawfeeq bin Fawzan Al-Rabiah, signed on behalf of the Kingdom.

Under the agreement, both governments outlined detailed guidelines for the upcoming Hajj season, including arrangements for Hajj services, fee payment mechanisms, and the facilitation of services for Maldivian Hajj operators. The agreement also confirms the establishment of a Maldivian Hajj Mission in Saudi Arabia during the pilgrimage period. This formal arrangement is renewed annually to ensure smooth coordination between the two countries.

During bilateral discussions, Minister Dr Shaheem conveyed the Maldives’ appreciation to King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for their continued support in facilitating Hajj and Umrah services. He also acknowledged the assistance provided by the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah in addressing challenges faced by Maldivian pilgrims.

The Minister further expressed gratitude for the Maldives’ inclusion in the Mecca Route Initiative, which streamlines immigration and travel procedures for Maldivian pilgrims. He reaffirmed that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu places strong emphasis on strengthening the Maldives–Saudi Arabia relationship, describing ties between the two nations as deeply rooted and resilient.
