Indian Minister of Civil Aviation and Special Envoy of the Prime Minister, Shri Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu, has described the redevelopment of Hanimaadhoo International Airport as a symbol of the enduring partnership between India and the Maldives.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Minister Naidu noted that the project embodies the shared vision of both countries, grounded in friendship, trust, and mutual respect, as they commemorate six decades of diplomatic relations. He noted that under the leadership of both countries, bilateral ties have evolved into a multi-dimensional partnership guided by India’s Neighbourhood First policy.
Highlighting India’s contribution to Maldivian development in housing, health, renewable energy, water, and now transport infrastructure, he emphasised that the new airport stands as a flagship of India’s development assistance, designed to resonate with Maldivian culture and tradition.
He expressed confidence that the upgraded facility will unlock new economic opportunities in the northern Maldives, strengthening tourism, investment, and fisheries. He added that additional projects will follow under the recently approved USD 565 million line of credit, alongside ongoing efforts to advance a Free Trade Agreement and an Investment Treaty.
Minister Naidu further praised the Maldives’ pioneering seaplane operations, expressing India’s interest in enhanced cooperation on air mobility, technology transfer, and training.
