Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed has described the passing of the Trademark Bill by the People’s Majlis on Monday as a historic milestone for the Maldives.

In a post on his official X account, the Minister highlighted that, for the first time, both local and foreign trademarks can now be registered and protected under the new law. He noted that the legislation strengthens intellectual property rights and boosts investor confidence – a major step in the country’s legal and economic development.

The new Trademark Law grants trademark owners exclusive rights to use their marks in connection with goods and services, ensures product authenticity, and prevents the unauthorised use of similar marks that may mislead consumers. It also makes counterfeiting a criminal offence and introduces provisions for registering certification and collective marks, enhancing trust and quality in the Maldivian market.

Minister Saeed stated that the law aligns with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s vision to strengthen intellectual property protection and foster an environment of confidence and opportunity for innovators, entrepreneurs, and investors.
