The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has announced that 85 per cent of work on Segment One of the Boduthakurufaanu Magu Project has been completed.

The upgrade, which aims to modernise one of Malé City’s busiest roads, is being implemented in three segments and is designed to reduce chronic traffic congestion and improve pedestrian access.

According to MTCC, major structural works for the first segment are now finished, including the installation of precast panels, concrete capping of the coastal wall and the stormwater management system. Installation of wells at the new pump station is currently under way, while sub-base preparation is expected to begin this week. Asphalt works have also commenced, marking steady progress toward completing the northern stretch of the road.

The first phase of the road development, launched on 8 August, includes upgrading 830 metres of asphalt on the north side of Boduthakurufaanu Magu, installation of 737 metres of sheet piles, and construction of a new sub-base and drainage network. Once complete, the road will feature four lanes and an enhanced drainage system designed to mitigate flooding during the rainy season.

MTCC stated that the redevelopment will significantly ease congestion in the area, addressing long-standing mobility challenges for motorists and residents. The modernisation of roads in Malé is part of a wider infrastructure agenda pledged under former President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, with additional road upgrades across the capital planned as part of ongoing urban development initiatives.
