President of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), Uz Adam Shamil, has called for an increase in the commission’s budget to effectively address public concerns and strengthen anti-corruption efforts across the Maldives.

Speaking before the Parliament’s Budget Committee on the proposed 2026 State Budget, Uz Shamil said the ACC requires adequate financial resources to carry out investigations efficiently and uphold public trust in its work.

Highlighting financial constraints, Uz Shamil noted that the commission’s proposed budget ceiling is MVR 49.84 million, while only MVR 47.37 million has been allocated in the State budget. Of this, 96.1 per cent is designated for salaries and administrative expenses, leaving just MVR 1 million for programmes. He also pointed out that the current office space, housed in a residential property, poses security risks for individuals summoned for investigation, and stressed the need for improved facilities.

According to Uz Shamil, only 0.05 per cent of the ACC’s budget is allocated for core anti-corruption activities, and MVR 123,000 for identifying and addressing corruption cases. He emphasised that if the budget is properly managed and adequately funded, the commission can expedite major investigations, enhance transparency, and ensure those involved in corruption are brought before the courts.
